About Stockport
A large town in its own right, seven miles south east of Manchester, Stockport has a population of some 136,081 as of the 2011 census.
The town was relatively small until the 18th century which saw it expand as the industrial revolution drastically changed the north west, cotton becoming a key industry for the town and central to its growing importance.
The town also became central to the UK’s hat industry and by 1884 was exporting more than six million hats a year. The industry of course lends its name to the nickname of the town’s football club – The Hatters.
The town’s most famous feature is the Stockport viaduct. Built in 1840, this imposing presence has been immortalised in the drawings of L.S Lowry.
Tennis great player Fred Perry, a former Wimbledon champion, is among famous people to have been born in Stockport.
